Weaving Words 1X “ Extending Literature Through Fine Arts”
Weaving words convention was held on April 21 & 22, 2008 in Lethbridge, Alberta. The focus was on “Extending Literature through the Fine Arts”.
SHEA MELLOW BFA/BEd, our Clay for Kids Lethbridge franchise partner was presenting at this convention. Shea’s presentation centered on - Everybody loves to play with clay. Learning some basic clay techniques and knowledge about clay and pottery can help enrich any classroom, not only in art classes but across the entire curriculum. Projects linking to Language Arts, Social Studies, and even Math and Science will be illustrated. Focusing on curriculum links across grades 4 -7, this session will cover knowledge and skill as well as provide a ‘hands on’ clay experience to the participants.
Chinook Entrepreneur Challenge
As an experienced teacher of seven years, Shea Mellow brings classroom knowledge as well as fine arts expertise to a new venture, Clay for Kids. Graduating from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Fine Arts, her background is proficient. She presently lives in Lethbridge and is enjoying her young family and new, creative pottery business. Winning second place in the Chinook Entrepreneur Contest, Shea Mellow with Clay for Kids Lethbridge was honoured that panels of screening judges and finalist judging panels saw such potential in the new business in our region. After an eight week schedule offering helpful business plan development classes, plans were judged at a screening level and then slowly narrowed to finalists. Seeing strengths as a young entrepreneur with background skills and experience as well as business savvy and passion for her business, judges awarded Shea with second place and an honorarium towards implementing the business plan. What a great start to Year 2 of Clay for Kids Lethrbidge!
